This article details the best places for a beginner to buy their first acoustic guitar at a good price.

Sooner or later if you really want to learn the guitar you will have to buy one. Grabbing your friend's guitar and strumming a few chords here and there works for a while but you will lack consistency. And consistency, even if it means just playing 15 minutes a day, is important if you want to learn guitar fast.

Where to buy one?

You could walk straight into a guitar shop and be lucky enough to talk to an honest, knowledgeable and helpful salesperson during a discount sale and bingo you've scored! And if it's a decent discount sale then you might get a guitar starter pack with guitar case and tuner etc.

Or, if you want to get a quality used guitar for the same price you'd pay for a not-as-good-new-one, read on...

1) Start telling your friends and acquaintances that you're on the lookout for a second hand acoustic guitar. You'll be surprised at the great guitars people have got stored away totally forgotten and for $50 or $100 you will get a much more expensive instrument. They'll be glad to clear out the attic.

2) Next, try local newspapers in the classifieds private music sales and if something interesting is near you, go and check it out. I've done this and bought a good guitar with a tuner and microphone thrown into the deal. Yeah!

3) You could also try pawn shops as they often have good guitars for sale at reasonable prices.

4) Garage or yard sales are also a goldmine for unwanted acoustic guitars. Don't be put off it they look dusty and you don't know the brand just pick them up and have a strum.

5) Another option is e-bay but if the seller isn't local, you can't actually play before you buy which is a bit stressful. I recommend this for guitar buyers who really know what they are looking for as bargains do appear.

What kind?

If you're just starting out, there's no need to buy a brand new top-of-the-line guitar as you may end up realizing that guitar is not your burning passion and you will have just dropped US$2000 plus on what will become an ornament.

There are plenty of decent beginner guitars made by companies like Yamaha, Ibanez etc. If you're buying a new guitar in a shop, talk to the salesperson and see what they have to offer.

If you're looking for a used guitar then don't worry so much about brands and just play them! Of course, if you see a Martin or some other classic acoustic guitar brand in a garage sale then contain your excitement and ask the price.

What I'm saying is that often older unknown brands (particularly those made in Japan years ago) are excellent guitars and if in good condition, will be a great buy. Also, it's easy to play guitar songs on an instrument that has already been worn in.
